And who said NASCAR was boring?

Aric Almirola won his first NASCAR race at the Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola at Daytona International Speedway yesterday after he managed to avoid two massive crashes during the race.

Almirola, driver of Richard Petty Motorsports’ No. 43 Ford, was named the winner 112 laps into the scheduled 160 after heavy rain brought a halt to proceedings.

The first of the two big crashes occurred on Lap 20 of the race and it involved 16 cars. Here’s what NASCAR had to say about the first crash: “Ricky Stenhouse Jr. gets loose and collects several drivers, including Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. on lap 20 of the Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola at Daytona International Speedway.”

As for the second crash, it occurred on Lap 98 and involved 26 cars. Here’s what NASCAR had to say about that one: “Kasey Kahne spins collecting Jamie McMurray, Kyle Busch, and many others on Lap 98.”

Speaking about his win, Almirola said: “I was doing a lot of hard-core praying, hoping the skies would open up and rain. I don’t think it was handed to us by any means. I feel like we had a good enough car to go back out there and win if we needed to.”
