Video: An efficient, if highly dangerous-looking method of loading turf in a bog in Galway

Turf's up

Conor Heneghan

Not what you expect to see on an average day at the bog.

With the fine spell of weather we’ve been having of late, Irish people have been putting on their summer clothes on and heading in vast numbers to a place beginning with B: the bog.

A lot of Irish people enjoy the hard labour that’s part and parcel of a trip to the bog; others positively despise it and try and make the experience go by as quickly as possible.

These lads unloading turf from a dumper to a trailor via a very steep ramp obviously belong in the latter category.

New methods for getting the turf home

While the system above is undoubtedly an efficient one, we couldn’t help but watch through our fingers as the wheels of the dumper hovered treacherously close to going over the top of the ramp.

Thankfully, disaster was averted in this case.

Dangerous? Yes, but as an unidentified agricultural expert in JOE Towers said upon witnessing the video: “Sure it beats bagging it anyway.”

Hat-tip to Damien Hoade for sending this one our way
