VIDEO: This flooded pub in Thomastown refused to stop serving pints

Tony Cuddihy

Everything we love about Ireland is here.

Community spirit and the refusal to give up on the possibility of a few pints at the flooded O’Hara’s pub in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny.

JOE reader Alice O’Hanlon sent us in video clip and pictures as the locals came together to push back the flood waters, while Breda behind the bar somehow managed to keep the pints coming.

“Only in Ireland you would find a pub (like this),” Alice tells us. “When Thomastown is impassable houses are flooded to near the tops of doorways, there is one pub that is one of the most flooded pubs in Thomastown that stays open through the flood pumping water out while pulling pints.

“Breda is the main woman here keeping the volunteers fuelled for the day’s work, the pumps going through the pub, the fire lighting full blast and the telly turned on to watch the latest sport and plugs to charge the phones for the goods snaps!”

Brilliant stuff, folks.
