VIDEO: This footage of a Mayo nightclub in 1990 is nostalgic gold

Tony Cuddihy

People of Mayo, this is for you.

JOE reader Gerry McGuire dusted down the old camcorder and got this footage on YouTube, and it’s absolutely perfect viewing for anyone who grew up in Ballina during the days when you could smoke in nightclubs.

It comes from Roxy’s Niteclub on the Sligo Road in February 1990, as people dance to everything from The Cure to early U2, to the glories of Technotronic and the inevitable slow set.

They even have a safe sex warning for those horny west of Ireland folk, with a DJ announcing: “Tonight’s password is, ‘Don’t be silly, put a condom on that willy!'”

For anyone under the age of 25, this is what your parents used to get up to. Exceptional.
