WATCH: Chilling video released to emphasise the importance of farm safety

Alan Loughnane

This is very important…

Farming is the most hazardous profession in Ireland, and it consistently reports the highest number of fatalities in Ireland compared to other sectors in the country.

Analysis of fatal accident statistics from the Health and Safety Authority last year revealed that farmers are eight times more likely to die in a workplace related accident than the general working population.

A new advert from the Farm Safety Partnership in Northern Ireland has been launched to raise awareness of the dangers of farming and in particular, of freshly calved cows.

It’s part of the “Stop and think SAFE” campaign and features a short clip where a father gets injured by an aggressive cow while he checks on the health of her newborn calf.

Speaking about the advert, Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) Chief Executive and FSP Chairman Keith Morrison said: “All too often accidents happen on our farms which are preventable, so we want to continue to raise awareness for everyone working on or visiting a working farm.

HSENI wants you to come and talk to us about how to make our farms safer places for farmers and their families, and about what else can be done to raise the profile of dangers and health issues within the farming community.”
