WATCH: Hero nurse tells the story of saving a Dublin Bus driver’s life

Carl Kinsella

Nurse Dublin Bus

What an absolute hero.

Aoife McGivney, the nurse who saved a Dublin Bus driver’s life earlier this week when he went into cardiac arrest behind the wheel, appeared on The Late Late Show last night.

The nurse joined told Ryan Tubridy and spoke about she almost missed her bus before the life-saving moment, only catching it in the nick of time.

She also described in detail the scene on the bus during the traumatic experience.

“We were coming up to O’Connell Street and we noticed something was a bit off. We started going through a red light. I had my earphones in and people and started screaming and I was kind of like ‘What’s going on?'”

“I jumped into action, and obviously because I said I was a nurse everybody was looking at me like I had the answer to everything.”

McGivney had been on her way to work in Dublin’s Mater Hospital when the incident took place. With the help of other passengers, she managed to get the driver out of his booth and onto flat ground.

“He was in recovery position and his pulse went, and his breathing went, and I started CPR. So we just did compressions, the usual, get the AD machine, call 999.”

“I want to shout out to him. He’s great. I went into the hospital on Wednesday. I wanted to give him some space, this was all very publicised and he didn’t know anything really until his family had told him how big it was and how dangerous it was for him. We needed to let that sink in for him.”

“So I met him… and I cried. I bawled.”

RTÉ shared the clip on their official Facebook page, and you can watch it below.
