WATCH: John Oliver looks at the highs and lows (and highs) of legal marijuana on Last Week Tonight

Rory Cashin

Talk about a tricky subject matter.

John Oliver has never been one to shy away from pretty much anything ever, but even he looks a little stumped when he’s trying to make sense of the legalities of marijuana in America.

While many individual states and counties have passed their own laws on the drug, allowing the use of medicinal marijuana to be used by many of those who need it, on a basic federal sense, it is still seen a very much being illegal.

In fact, according to US law, marijuana is classed as an equal substance to heroin, and more dangerous than cocaine or meth.

The reason for the heavy clampdown on the drug seems to stem back to President Nixon, who recorded himself saying that “the Jews” are the reason it was so popular, and then went on to make a very Trump-ian remark about how he planned to get rid of it.

Oliver also looks at the harsh realities of making the drug illegal, including how it effects a paraplegic who found himself fired despite have a medical marijuana pass, or the PTSD sufferer who can only sleep with the drug’s aid.
