WATCH: John Oliver talks about the end of Europe as we know it on Last Week Tonight

Rory Cashin

In this week’s edition of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver wants to talk about the upcoming French elections, and asks the question you’re probably asking yourself: “Why should I care?”

Well, it turns out you should care quite a bit, actually.

With the upcoming elections, some of the political front-runners are in favour of a French version of Brexit – which we would like to be called Depart-ieu – and without putting too fine a point on it, if France decide to leave the EU, that could fundamentally bring an end the EuroZone, and pretty much Europe as we currently know it.

Oliver looks through the Presidential hopefuls – which includes a man who wants to colonize Mars like the movie with “Larry Skywalker”, someone who fell in love with his high school teacher and married her, and another who’s primary funder claimed the Holocaust was pretty much overrated as far as tragedies go – and warns that the future of France, which means Europe, which also means the World, is kind of hanging in the balance here.

But at least we can still make jokes about it…
