West Cork businessman looking to break bra-opening world record for charity

It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it.

It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it.

Sean Murray is used to having his hands full as a busy shopkeeper in West Cork, but this is something new even for him as he makes a bold attempt to get into the Guinness Book of Records for opening bras. And all in the name of charity of course.

His Skibbereen outlet will host a Guinness World Record attempt on Saturday October 26th as he bids to beat the current record of 69 bras in 60 seconds.

At times men can be accused of being all-thumbs when it comes to unclasping, but Sean has been getting some training in ahead of the big day by practicing on in-store mannequins.

“I have a few more weeks of practising and honing the technique but I am getting there. The guidelines are quite strict so we must adhere to certain criteria,” he told The Irish Examiner.

And he is hoping a big crowd – including at least 70 women in order to break the record – turn up to raise funds the Irish Cancer Society’s Get the Girls breast cancer campaign. And on top of this, he and his staff also plan to try and fit more than 500 women for bras in eight hours, and fit another 500 men and women for jeans in eight hours to enter the record books on the treble.

“We really want to do something different to raise awareness for the charity and although the events themselves will be fun, they will raise money for a very serious cause that affects too many women in Ireland,” the shopkeeper added.

A great initiative – the breast around you might say – to raise awareness and funds for the breast cancer campaign, though we thought opening just the one bra was a challenge in itself.
