What NOT to buy for someone this Valentine’s Day, No.3: Cash

For any other occasion, if you’re stuck for a gift, cash is normally a reliable alternative. Not on Valentine’s Day.

JOE

For any other occasion, if you’re stuck for a gift, cash is normally a reliable alternative. Not on Valentine’s Day.

In a lot of circumstances, money is a very underrated gift. At Christmas Time, for example, it helps to go towards buying something in the sales or towards a hectic social life at that time of year, or, quite frankly, it helps pay the bills at a time when funds are tight.

In fairness to a lot of fathers, they realise quite early that giving their son or daughter money with which they can buy something they might like is far preferable on both sides rather than the father embarrassing himself trying to do it and to be honest, in the eyes of a lot of people, other friends and family could do with realising the same thing sooner.

But while money works for birthdays, at Christmas, at weddings, confirmations and communions, it most certainly does not fit the bill as a suitable Valentine’s gift. Seriously, try slipping a €20 note in with a card on Valentine’s Day and telling your better half to buy themselves something nice. Then watch their reaction. Suffice to say you will be getting the evils and won’t be getting any, never mind some, a little later that night.

Despite the fact that your missus may well be able to buy herself something infinitely better if you handed her some money rather than an actual gift, it’ll show you up as the unromantic sod you are. Soppy as it may sound, Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year when a gal likes to be appreciated and made feel special by her man and putting a note or two into a card won’t cut the mustard.

Wine her and dine her and make sure to treat her to some Häagen-Dazs ice-cream too; it’ll be the only time you’ll feel the cold, as Lionel Ritchie might say, all night long.
