Car hire excess insurance – is it really worth it when renting a car?

Car hire excess insurance can seem like an unnecessary cost at the beginning, but can save you in the long run.

In all the excitement of booking a summer road trip, forking out on unnecessary costs is the last thing you’re going to want to do. While car hire excess insurance might seem pointless when your car rental deal already includes car insurance, it can often be a lot more comprehensive.

Basically, the biggest benefit is the fact that it can save you heaps of money. Paying as low as *€0.14 per day for the AIG car hire excess insurance we provide, for example would be a lot better than having to pay several hundred euros to a car rental company abroad, without the chance of getting your money back.

Some of the things that can be covered for with car hire excess insurance:

  • Windscreen
  • Roof
  • Undercarriage
  • Wheels/tyres

That said, not all plans are the same. Most will take into account how often you’re going to be hiring a car (whether it’s once in a blue moon or several times a year), and adjust costs accordingly.

An example of how it can be of huge benefit would be if you notice a small bit of damage when you’re bringing the car back to the rental company. While they will still of course ask for you to cover the cost of any damages, you can get it back with your handy car hire excess insurance.

*Price of €0.14 per day is based on an individual aged 21-84 purchasing an Annual Excess Only policy (annual premium €49.99). Example correct as of 22/02/2019.
