PICS: Motorist in Dublin leaves note and cash on car due to broken parking meter; gets clamped anyway

Conor Heneghan

After going to all that trouble…

JOE reader Isaac Butler got in touch with us on Thursday to tell us of a rather annoying experience he had gone through while parking his car in Dublin that morning.

When parking his car in a spot he frequents on Cumberland Road in Dublin 2, a short distance from Fitzwilliam Square, Isaac found that the parking meter was broken.

With no other meter on that lane and as he only intended on leaving his car there for an hour, he left a note along with €2.20, the hourly fee charged for parking in the area.

Isaac tells us that he returned to his car 55 minutes later to find that it had been clamped – both the clamp and the note on the windscreen can be seen in the picture below.

Having contacted the company responsible for clamping his car, Isaac was told that it was general practice for their clampers to de-mobilise any vehicle without a ticket.

Dublin City Council’s policy on pay and display states that, if a machine is out of order, motorists must find another machine within the same zone (or a higher tariff zone) and, where that is not possible, advise motorists to contact them on (01) 222 2218.
