Here are the 15 best movies that are on your TV this weekend

Rory Cashin

Yeah, the weather this weekend is supposed to be lovely, but should you happen to find yourself indoors, then we’ve got some great recommendations for you!

If you’re heading to the cinema this weekend, you’ll most likely already know that Solo: A Star Wars Story is the big release, and we’ve reviewed it and all of the other big releases in the latest episode of The Big Reviewski, which you can check out right here:

Otherwise, if you’re sat in over the next few days, then we’ve got some great recommendations for you!

FRIDAY 25 MAY

The Purge – E4 – 21:00

Go back to see how it all began (before we ACTUALLY go back to see how it all began, with the upcoming The First Purge hitting cinemas soon), with Ethan Hawke and Queen Cersei protecting their home and family on the night of the annual Purge.

Van Helsing – ITV2 – 21:00

Cards on the table, this isn’t a good movie. But it is a FUN movie, with Hugh Jackman playing a vampire hunter, who also gets caught up in a mystical plot involving Frankenstein’s Monster, werewolves and Kate Beckinsale’s big arrow gun.

The Grudge – Sky One – 00:00 (so, midnight on Friday going into Saturday morning)

One of the better horror remakes based on the big J-horror wave that hit Hollywood about a decade back, with Sarah Michelle Gellar finding her new home is haunted by the croaky voiced spirit of a little boy… and also his long haired evil mother.

SATURDAY 26 MAY

Ghost Town – SyFy – 20:00

Ricky Gervais is an obnoxious man who has died. Seven minutes later, he is brought back to life, but can now see and speak to dead people. One of those dead people is Greg Kinnear, who has some unfinished business with his wife (Tea Leoni), and he needs Gervais’ help to finish that business, but things take a turn when Gervais starts to fall for the recent widow.

Meet The Parents – ITV2 – 21:00

“I have nipples Greg. Could you milk me?”

Rush – RTE Two – 22:30

Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl star in the dramatised version of the real-world rivalry between world-class racers James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Some of the best Formula One sequences you’ll ever see.

Goodfellas – ITV4 – 23:05

DeNiro. Pesci. Liotta. Not just one of the greatest mobster movies ever made, just one of the best movies of all time. End of.

Bad Neighbours – ITV2 – 23:15

Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne move into a new home, and discover that a college frat has bought the house right next door. What starts off as a war of manners turns into an all-out war of pranks.

SUNDAY 27 MAY

The Core – E4 – 14:20

Another “not good, but SO fun” movie, with Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Delroy Lindo and Stanley Tucci as scientists drilling to the centre of the Earth to restart the planet’s core. Bonkers stuff, but brainlessly enjoyable.

Jurassic World – ITV2 – 17:40

Fallen Kingdom is out soon, so at least enjoy the small amount of time we have with the fully functioning park, before it all goes to shit.

Spy – Film4 – 21:00

Melissa McCarthy is the personal assistant to a world-class super-spy (Jude Law), and when he is killed, she is sent into the field to find out what happened. Rose Byrne is amazing as the stuck-up villain, but Jason Statham steal the entire film with his previously untapped comedic timing. “My fiance was pushed from a plane, and was a hit by another plane on the way down… in front of my eyes!”

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – Channel 4 – 22:10

AKA The one properly good one.

Sudden Death – ITV2 – 23:05

Jean-Claude Van Damme plays a police officer who goes full Die Hard when a hockey rink is taken over by terrorists. JCVD’s best movie? Discuss.

Ides Of March – BBC One – 23:35

George Clooney writes, directs and stars in this political drama about a govenor that gets caught up in a world of every-darkening shadiness, with a very impressive cast-list including Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Evan Rachel Wood and Marisa Tomei.

Scary Movie – Comedy Central – 23:45

We’ve no idea how well the references to The Matrix and The Blair Witch Project hold up nearly two decades later. Only one way to find out…
