These are the 19 best movies to watch on the TV this weekend

Rory Cashin

Ryan Reynolds fans will be happy with the choices this weekend.

If you’re heading to the cinema, then we recommend you check out the latest episode of The Big Reviewski, in which we review all of the new releases including Anon, The Strangers: Prey At Night and Entebbe.

If you’re sitting in, then we’ve got no less than NINETEEN great movies to choose from, kicking off with…

FRIDAY 11 MAY

Shaun Of The Dead – RTE Two – 21:30

“You’ve got red on you…”

War Of The Worlds – TV3 – 22:00

Tom Cruise stars in the modern retelling of the alien invasion thriller, with some heavy 9/11 subtext going on throughout. Some of the darkest and most intense scenes ever by director Spielberg, too.

Scream 2 – Sky One – 23:00

The arguably better than the original scary movie, as the body count doubles and the death scenes are much more inventive. Plus that nail-biting scene in the police car…

Louis Theroux: My Scientology Movie – BBC Two – 23:05

The much loved documentary film-maker is denied admittance into the Church of Scientology’s headquarters, setting into motion a clever, confrontational and funny plan to try and reveal the inner workings of the mysterious organisation.

Buried – BBC One – 00:25

Ryan Reynolds is a contractor who wakes up buried alive in a coffin in Iraq, armed with little more than a mobile phone, his wits and a dwindling amount of oxygen.

SATURDAY 12 MAY

Finding Neverland – BBC Two – 13:55

Johnny Depp, Kate Winslett and Freddie Highmore star in this period drama about the author of Peter Pan, and his inspiration to write the story. If you make it through this without crying, then you are a stronger person than us.

Big Hero 6 – BBC One – 16:45

Disney take on a Marvel property, as a group of teens turn themselves into a group of super-heroes using their technological prowess. Visually inventive and A LOT of fun, not to mention we pretty much all wanted a Baymax the second he arrived on screen.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King – ITV2 – 17:25

The fantastic final chapter to the much loved LOTR trilogy shows how to finish a story properly… (at least until they go back for seconds with The Hobbit Trilogy prequels…)

Forrest Gump – Sky One – 21:00

“Life is like a box of chocolates.”

Just Friends – E! Entertainment – 21:00

Ryan Reynolds is hot now, and goes back to his home town for Christmas and runs into the girl who he was crushing on hard back when he was a high-school nerd. Can we win her over now that he is a big hunk? Not if Anna Farris’ scene-stealing “singer” has anything to do with it…

Predator – RTE One – 21:00

“GET TO THE CHOPPAH!”

2 Guns – Channel 4 – 23:15

Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington are competing undercover agents in a major drugs cartel, who are forced to work together in order to survive when the bust goes haywire and they are left disavowed in the middle of Mexico.

Men & Chicken – Film 4 – 23:15

After learning that they were adopted, misfit brothers Elias and Gabriel travel to a remote island in an attempt to track down their biological father. Sounds normal enough, but we cannot properly emphasise just how weird and how uniquely funny this movie actually is. If you’re looking for something COMPLETELY different, then we really can’t recommend this enough.

Executive Decision – ITV4 – 23:50

Kurt Russell and Halle Berry (and Steven Seagal, kind of) attempt to stop a hijacking, but in a much more low-key, subtle way than the usual action-packed hijacking stuff we’re used to. Plus the plane is armed with a bomb filled with nerve gas, and they plan on crashing it into Washington D.C.

SUNDAY 13 MAY

Pacific Rim – ITV2 – 19:25

Giant Robots VS Giant Monsters. What more do you want? Charlie for It’s Always Sunny? Good, cos he’s in this movie, too.

Eddie The Eagle – Channel 4 – 21:00

The true life story of Eddie Edwards (played by Kingsman’s Taron Egerton), who dreams of becoming an Olympic skier, despite not being blessed with anything close to skill. He crosses paths with the “bad boy of skiing” (played by Hugh Jackman), and together they attempt to do the impossible. An incredible feel-good movie.

Ransom – ITV4 – 22:00

Mel Gibson and Rene Russo’s young son is kidnapped, but instead of giving the kidnappers the ransom money, Gibson offers the money to the first person who can help them get their son back, which sets off a domino effect of double and triple crosses.

Cardboard Gangsters – 3E – 23:00

A group of young lads try to take over the drug trade in Darndale, chasing money, power and sex. One of the most talked about Irish movies of recent years, with an incredible career-making performance by John Connors.

Good Kill – Film 4 – 23:35

An Air Force drone pilot, played by Ethan Hawke, begins to question the ethics of dropping bombs on Afghanistan from the safety of his post in Las Vegas. From the same writer/director as Gattaca, In Time and Anon.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
