Here are the 20 best movies on the TV this weekend

Rory Cashin

A lot of great stuff to choose from the Paddy’s Weekend…

If you’re looking for movies this weekend, and you’re heading to the cinema, then you should check out this week’s episode of JOE and Her’s movie podcast, in which we review new releases Peter Rabbit, Tomb Raider, Damo & Ivor: The Movie and Netflix’s Annihilation:

If you’re sitting in though, then we’ve plenty for you to choose from, too, starting with your Friday evening viewings…

FRIDAY

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes – RTE Two – 21:00

The middle entry in the brilliant ape-rebellion trilogy sees Caesar (Andy Serkis) trying to quell his second-in-command’s attempt at taking over the monkey population, while also fighting off the humans who are trying to take back the planet.

2 Guns – TV3 – 21:00

Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington are two rival agents who are attempting to take down a massive drug cartel, but keep getting in each other’s way, until they’re forced to work together for the greater good. A more-than-decent action-thriller-comedy.

Paul – ITV2 – 21:00

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are two best friends who are travelling across America towards Comic Con, and actually happen upon a real-life alien (voiced by Seth Rogen) who enjoys nothing better than getting high, and they head off on their own drug-fuelled version of ET.

Pineapple Express – Comedy Central – 00:00

Seth Rogen and James Franco are two kinda-friends, one uses the other for sourcing drugs, but they accidentally find themselves embroiled in a massive gang war between drug lords and crooked cops.

SATURDAY

Song Of The Sea – TG4 – 11:45

The beautiful, Oscar-nominated story of an Irish youth (David Rawle) who discovers that his mute sister is a selkie who must find her voice and free supernatural creatures from the spell of a Celtic goddess (Fionnula Flanagan).

Avatar – Film 4 – 17:50

You know this movie already, so you’ll already know if you like it or not.

Up – RTE One – 19:00

Pixar’s assault on your tear-ducts in the opening few minutes is replaced by the tale of an old man and a young boy who travel across the world using thousands of balloons attached to his house.

Pacific Rim – ITV2 – 20:30

Giant monsters have appeared from an alternative dimension thanks to a portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, and using giant robots, and only Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day and Idris “Cancelling The Apocalypse” Elba can save the day.

The World’s End – E4 – 21:00

The final entry in the Cornetto Trilogy sees Simon Pegg and Nick Frost joined by Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman and Eddie Marsan attempt to complete an age-old pub-crawl in their hometown, but something is very different about their sleepy village…

Ghostbusters – Sky One – 21:00

“He slimed me…”

I Went Down – RTE Two – 21:15

Brendan Gleeson stars in the funny Irish gangster movie about a pair of guns-for-hire sent to find someone who owes a local mob guy a lot of money… but things quickly get way more complicated than either of them are capable of dealing with.

Wanted – ITV4 – 21:50

James McAvoy gets recruited by Angelina Jolie into Morgan Freeman’s secret group of assassins who have spent centuries defining how world events turn out thanks to some well placed, curvy bullets.

Citadel – Film 4 – 00:40

An Irish horror movie, which sees an agoraphobic young father team up with a local priest to defend the local block of flats from a group of feral teenagers who have lost control and are committing very violent acts against the community.

Maniac – Film 4 – 02:20

Elijah Wood plays the incredibly creepy serial killer who does some incredibly violent things to every woman he takes out on a date. The entire movie is shown from his perspective, so there’s no getting away from the horror. An endurance test of a horror movie.

SUNDAY

Catch Me If You Can – BBC Two – 17:45

Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio team up for this fun, jaunty crime-caper in which Leo plays a very young criminal who is chased all across America by Agent Hanks.

Brooklyn – BBC One – 20:30

A real tear-jerker, in which Saoirse Ronan tries to leave Ireland and make a new life for herself in New York, but finds it increasingly difficult to cut her emotional ties with the old country.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith – Comedy Central – 21:00

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are happily married (in the movie), both completely unaware that the other is a high profile assassin in a competing assassin’s agency. Until they’re both given 48 hours to kill the other, or a kill order will be put out to have them both killed.

The River Wild – TV3 – 22:30

Meryl Streep is a rafting expert (stop laughing) who finds her little boat, with her son on board, hijacked by some violent criminals who want to get out of dodge by taking the most violent, unpredictable river imaginable.

The King’s Speech – Film 4 – 23:25

Yes, it beat a lot of other, worthier, BETTER movies to Best Picture (The Social Network, Black Swan, The Wrestler, Inception…), but that shouldn’t distract from the fact that it is still a really enjoyable movie, with a duo of great performances by Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush.

28 Weeks Later – SyFy – 00:50

The much-better-than-it-is-given-credit-for sequel to the zombie outbreak original, featuring Rose Byrne, Idris Elba, Jeremy Renner and Robert Carlyle attempting to get civilization back up and running, before it all goes to zombie poop again.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
