Here are the 5 best movies on the telly tonight

Rory Cashin

There are definitely worse ways to spend your Tuesday evening…

If you’re not heading to the cinema (and you should, there are some great movies on the big screen this week, and we’ve reviewed them all in the latest episode of The Big Reviewski), then we’re here to take the hard work out of choosing what to watch on the telly.

A great boxing movie, an Arnie “classic”, a full-on sci-fi head-melter, a fun romantic comedy, and one of the best documentaries of the decade.

Take your pick.

TUESDAY 7 AUGUST

Never Been Kissed – Film 4 – 6.55pm

Drew Barrymore is a fresh-faced journalist who is sent back to high school, going undercover as a fake student to research modern teenagers. However, she had a terrible time during her own time in school, and it isn’t easy to completely reinvent yourself. A very funny, very cute rom-com.

Eraser – TV3 – 9.00pm

Arnie plays an agent for the Witness Protection Programme who is assigned to Vivica A. Fox, someone who has seen too much at a company that is making some very dangerous weapons, and the bad guys will go to any lengths to silence her. It is not a good film. But it is a very FUN film. The sequel will be out in cinemas this November.

Creed – ITV2 – 9.00pm

Stallone gets drawn back into the world of boxing, taking on training Michael B. Jordon, who plays the son of Rocky’s dead BFF Apollo Creed. Brilliant performances by the two leads, as well as Tessa Thompson in a great scene-stealing supporting role, and the whole thing is just very emotional. No, YOU’RE crying.

12 Monkeys – BBC Four – 10.00pm

Bruce Willis plays a time-traveller from 2030, sent back to 1990 to get information on a virus that will effectively kill most of mankind, but when he arrives in the past, he is promptly locked up in a mental institution, and the only person who believes him in the unstable fellow patient Brad Pitt.

Senna – ITV4 – 11.25pm

Insightful and emotionally powerful documentary on Brazilian Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna, who won the F1 world championship three times before his death at age 34.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
