Here are the 5 best movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

inglorious bastards

Action. Comedy. And some serious Oscar-winners.

A real “something for everyone” night on the telly.

Of course, you could go to the cinema, if you’re looking for a big superhero movie, or a decent horror remake?

But if not, then here’s what you’ve got to choose from on the box:

MONDAY 8 APRIL

Chain Reaction – Syfy – 8pm

Keanu Reeves is a genius scientist who believes he has discovered a new, clean energy source, until shady government agents try to shut him down by using it as a weapon, which in turn destroys half of Chicago.

He is then blamed for the incident, and he must go on the run (with fellow scientist Rachel Weisz along for the ride) and prove his innocence. From the director of The Fugitive, so think of it as an unofficial sequel to that movie.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – FilmFour – 8pm

The one that involves Tom climbing the world’s tallest building with little more than a sticky glove. Which then devolves into a foot chase through a huge sandstorm. Which then devolves further still into a car chase through that same sandstorm. One of the action scene highlights of the decade.

Spy – RTE Two – 9.30pm

Melissa McCarthy is the assistant to Jude Law’s superspy, but when he is killed in action, she volunteers to go out into the field and find out what happened to him. Funnier than it is given credit for, thanks to some great support from Rose Byrne in full villain mode, and Jason Statham as a too-self-serious agent.

Inglourious Basterds – TG4 – 9.30pm

The one in which Brad Pitt inspired a billion haircuts, and also fights Nazis and plans to kill Hitler. It is also the movie that introduced the world to Christoph Waltz, and for that, we should be eternally grateful.

McLaren – ITV4 – 10.20pm

A documentary that tells the story of Bruce McLaren, the New Zealander who founded the McLaren Motor Racing team, and eventually showed the world that a man of humble beginnings could take on the elite of motor racing and win.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
