Here are the 5 best movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

Wednesday evening, and we can’t ALL be going to Mariah.

Uhmmmm… maybe go to the cinema tonight.

We always try to find a good spin on these things, but tonight’s offerings aren’t great, and those that are great must be paying rent, because they are ALWAYS on.

You’ll be happy to know that both live-action Disney remake Aladdin and musical biopic Rocketman have been given early Irish cinema releases today, so maybe you can go check out one or both of them this evening?

If you’re insisting on sitting on, then this is the best we could find. Good luck!

WEDNESDAY 22 MAY

Little Miss Sunshine – E! Entertainment – 9pm

An extremely dysfunctional family head off on a road trip in order to get the youngest member to a beauty pageant.

Toni Collette, Steve Carrell, and Paul Dano bring the funnies and the sads in equal measure. Prepare to feel all of the feels.

xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage – FilmFour – 9pm

For some reason, Vin Diesel is insisting that each and every one of his characters deserves a franchise.

While his Fast and Furious Dom has a team to play with, it didn’t work out so well with lone-wolf Riddick, but at least Xander Cage is a bit more fun, returning to Triple-X it up after being replaced by (checks notes) Ice Cube in the last one.

Stuff explodes, none of it makes sense, but we get the feeling that is the point.

Timecop – Syfy – 10pm

Jean-Claude Van Damme is a time-travelling police officer, going back in time to stop a dodgy politician from taking over America. Arguably JCVD’s best movie, which isn’t saying a lot, but it is actually genuinely fun.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy – ITV4 – 10.30pm

An all-star cast feature in this tense, thoughtful thriller about double and triple-agents all doing wrong on each other, in the name of their respective governments. It is all headed by a brilliant Gary Oldman, one of the world’s best OTT actors, here dialing things WAAAAAAY back, to amazing effect.

Kill Bill: Vol. 2 – FilmFour – 11.10pm

The one where The Bride gets into a fight with a one-eyed Daryl Hannah in a mobile home. Not as tightly entertaining as the first volume, but filled with as many highlights.
