5 must-watch sports docuseries to check out if you’re a fan of Drive to Survive

Sports docuseries

The ever-popular Formula 1 series returned for its fifth season last week.

With the success of the Netflix series, the sport has enjoyed a momentous increase in fandom as the behind-the-scenes drama unfolds before our very eyes with as many twists and turns as a well-engineered episode of Eastenders.

If, however, your appetite is not satiated by the ten brand-new episodes on the streamer then here’s a list of five more series to get stuck into.

Full Swing – Netflix

The golf world took one look at Drive to Survive and decided it wanted in on the action. The new docuseries follows the likes of Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka, Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy as it weaves their stories on and off the course.

While there’s probably not as much Tiger Woods content as people would have wanted, there’s definitely enough here for both hardcore golf fans and the newly initiated to enjoy. Full Swing may not have the same level of pizzazz as Drive but it certainly has some interesting insights, particularly on the LIV drama.

Break Point – Netflix

Netflix are fully going in on their sports docuseries and keeping up with the cheesy titles too. Break Point comes from the team behind Drive and follows various top tennis stars as they compete around the world.

There are some big names in the series like Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas and some insights from legends such as Maria Sharapova, Andy Roddick and John McEnroe. While the series shares the same excellent production as Drive, it’s a bit harder to focus on the exciting moments of tennis in the same way as Formula 1 and the series doesn’t reach the same heights. It does give a good insight into the sport, however, especially for people new to tennis.

ESPN’s 30 for 30 – Disney+

Disney+ hosts some majorly impressive sports docs that you might miss upon scrolling through the site. ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentaries are all excellent, and while they all released as individual stories focusing on different American sports, you can definitely binge the mostly hour-long shows as one big series.

Within the collection are gems like Four Falls of Buffalo, documenting the nearly great Buffalo Bills who failed to win four straight Super Bowls. There’s also Bad Boys, the story of one of the most disliked NBA teams in history, the Detroit Pistons.

The Test – Prime Video

Cricket, of all sports, can be one of the hardest nuts to crack for the uninitiated. However The Test does a damn fine job of it. Following the fall from grace of the Australian national cricket team after the infamous 2018 ball tampering scandal, the series goes behind-the-scenes as captain Tim Paine and head coach Justin Langer try to redeem the credibility of the team.

We highly recommend diving into The Test, even if you don’t know your batters from your bowlers.

Take Us Home: Leeds United – Prime Video

With Sunderland ‘Til I Die setting the bar so high and the All or Nothing series grabbing the headlines, it’s easy to overlook some other football series in the packed line up.

Narrated by massive Leeds Fan Russell Crowe, Take Us Home shows the highs and lows of the Yorkshire club trying to get back into the Premier League. The documentary gives great insight into the players off the pitch during a time when they appointed one of the most interesting managers in football, Marcelo Bielsa. There’s not much of the Argentine manager in the documentary but the sheer aura around him at the club is exciting to watch.
