WEDNESDAY 18 JULY

Die Hard 4.0 – Film 4 – 9.00pm

Does it hold a candle to the original? No. But there is still some more-than-decent action sequences in here, especially the tunnel scene where Bruce and his new nerd mate find themselves in a completely darkened underground road, with cars approaching from either side. Explosions ensue.

Flightplan – Sky One – 9.00pm

Jodie Foster’s husband has just died, so she and her daughter are flying the body back home to bury him. Mid-flight, Foster wakes up to find her daughter is missing. Worse still, nobody on board ever remembers seeing her daughter, and there’s no evidence she was ever on board…

Sphere – SyFy – 9.00pm

Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone and Sam Jackson are scientists brought to the bottom of the ocean to investigate a spaceship that appears to have crash landed there. It doesn’t take long to realise that there is a lot more going on than they can handle, as whatever is on board the ship seems to be manifesting their worst fears into reality.

The Danish Girl – RTE One – 9.35pm

Eddie Redmayne plays artist Einear Wegener who, with the full support of his wife (played by Oscar-winning Alicia Vikander) becomes one of the first people in the world to undergo a sex change operation.

The Town – 3E – 10.05pm

Ben Affleck writes, directs and stars in this movie, playing the leader of a gang of bank robbers, who ends up falling in love with one of the hostages (played by Rebecca Hall) they took briefly during one of the heists. Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm and Blake Lively also co-star.

Man On Fire – Film 4 – 11.35pm

Denzel Washington is hired to protect young Dakota Fanning. So when she gets kidnapped, guess what? He doesn’t exactly take the day off work.
