Here are the 7 best movies on the TV this Bank Holiday Monday

Rory Cashin

How’s the hangover?

We imagine that the entire nation made the most of their Sunday, knowing that there was no work to be had on the Bank Holiday Monday, and are now thinking what time will the local takeaway be open to make an order for delivery ASAP, and also if there is anything on the telly to distract from the pain.

Thankfully, your pals at JOE are here to help:

The Princess Diaries – RTE One – 15:40

San Fransisco teenager Anne Hathaway discovers, much to her surprise, that she is actually the heir to the throne of Genovia, and that she is a real life princess! Grumpy grandmother Julie Andrews also pops up to give her some “princess lessons”.

Ghostbusters II – Sky One – 20:00

The first of our two movies that has a worse reputation than it deserves: this very funny sequel doesn’t quite match up the original, but the plot of an evil painting and ghost children snatchers is still pretty scary, and seeing the central four reunited is always fun to watch.

Just Friends – E! Entertainment – 20:00

Ryan Reynolds was the once shy and overweight teenager who has always had a massive crush on Amy Smart, and when he returns to his home town years later, now a hunky music executive with a deranged artist (a scene-stealing Anna Faris) along for the ride, he attempts to kindle up some romance with the one that got away.

Total Recall – SyFy – 21:00

The second of our “it really isn’t THAT bad, you guys” duo: Colin Farrell can’t match Arnie’s in the action stakes, but Bryan Cranston gives good villain, and Kate Beckinsale is clearly having a ball as the kick-ass femme fatale. Plus some of the action sequences are actually pretty decent.

Thor – Film 4 – 21:00

The three Thor films couldn’t feel more different to each other, with 2017’s gonzo Ragnarok feeling a million miles away from this first one, which feels like a Shakespearean action movie, with extra lightning effects. Still, Hemsworth is great in the role (“Bring me another!”), and his chemistry with Natalie Portman is palpable. Plus, Loki is still the best villain Marvel have come up with so far.

Ted 2 – RTE One – 21:20

Out goes Mila Kunis, in comes Amanda Seyfried, but Mark Wahlberg and Seth McFarlane as the teddy-come-to-naughty-life remain at the centre of everything. Now with added Liam Neeson.

The Snapper – Be3 – 23:30

Sharon Curley is a 20 year old living with her parents and many brothers and sisters. When she gets herself pregnant and refuses to name the father, she becomes the talk of the town. If you’ve never seen it, then you need to remedy that immediately.
