Winter is here.

In just a few short years, Game of Thrones has evolved from a cult classic into a pop culture behemoth that has everyone talking. Few other shows have the same ability to defy your expectations, inspire your imagination or deliver an emotional gut punch in quite the same way.

With the much-anticipated release of Season 7 on 17 July in Ireland, exclusively on Sky Atlantic, there’s still time to catch every single episode on Sky Box Sets.

If you’ve never watched Game of Thrones, we’re incredibly jealous. Seriously, you have so much to look forward to. Even if you’ve already watched it, you’d be amazed at how much you missed the first time around. Even superfans will pick up something new on a second viewing.

Sure, it can be brutal and dark at times but it can also be tender, smart and funny. This is an immersive trip into a different world and the clever storytelling will keep you coming back for more.

Here’s why you really should catch up before the new season starts.

1. It’s not just for fantasy nerds

Game of Thrones is rooted in reality. That’s why it appeals to fans who would never watch a fantasy series and why it continually smashes viewing records. It has transcended genres and become event television. The good thing about catching up on Sky Box Sets is that you don’t have to wait a week for your next fix.

Game of Thrones may have dragons but that’s not why it’s won more Emmys than any other fictional show. People love the political intrigue, family rivalries, flawed antiheroes and moral ambiguity.

2. It’s groundbreaking television

George RR Martin’s books were once considered impossible to adapt. The world was too big, there were too many people and it would be too expensive to make. They’ve managed the impossible and they keep producing television that no one’s ever seen before.

3. You don’t have to worry about spoilers

Social media is simply off-limits after a new Game of Thrones episode is screened. We’ve all had at least one episode ruined by a careless spoiler. The big advantage of revisiting the older seasons is that no one on Twitter will reveal who slept with who in the latest episode.

4. The twists, deaths and reversals

The show is notorious for killing off big characters and for genuinely shocking plot twists. It’s what makes it unmissable television and what drives the conversation. No character is safe and the heroes can lose. Anything can happen and that makes for compelling TV.

5. The political scheming

Game of Thrones is like a Darwinian nightmare where the power players are constantly engaged in a game of political survival. Power in this world is dictated by iron, blood or poison and the political scheming is what keeps you coming back for more. It’s less ‘One man, one vote’ than “One army, one dagger in my ally’s back.”

6. The complex characters

No other show could decimate its cast of leading characters every season and survive. Yet Game of Thrones has a deeper pool of quality characters than any other show and superb actors to play them. Its heroes, villains and minor characters are constantly evolving. When you (literally) cut the head off a leading character, two more compelling characters always seem to grow in their place.

7. It might save your friendships

There’s nothing worse than all the lads talking about something but not being able to join in. This show is a cultural phenomenon – everyone you know will be talking about Season 7 when it starts. So you can either find new mates who don’t like Game of Thrones or catch up and join the conversation in July!

You can now catch up on Games of Thrones Seasons 1-6 on Sky Box Sets, before Season 7 arrives on 17 July, exclusively on Sky Atlantic. Sky is currently offering new or existing customers half price Sky Box Sets for 12 months, when you join or upgrade for a limited time.

You can also enjoy over 350 box sets and a great range of exclusive shows you can’t get anywhere else. Visit the Sky website for more information.
