An 80’s cult favourite is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

The 80’s epic was the breakthrough film of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Do you feel like you have seen everything on Netflix? Not to worry, as JOE has highlighted the best movies airing on television this Wednesday night.

Check out our picks for the evening below.

The Hate U Give – Film Four – 9pm

Starr (Amandla Stenberg) witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressure from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right.

Praised for its timely story and lead performance, The Hate U Give boasts a whopping 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Jason Bourne – RTÉ One – 9.35pm

Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), the CIA’s most dangerous former operative, is drawn out of hiding to uncover more explosive truths about his past.

While a step down from the previous movies in the franchise, this fifth entry still functions as a solid action movie and includes one bravura set-piece which takes place during a protest in Greece.

Conan the Barbarian – ITV 4 – 10pm

Our pick for this evening, Conan the Barbarian tells the story of a young muscular barbarian warrior (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who seeks vengeance for the death of his parents at the hands of the leader of a snake cult (Star Wars’ James Earl Jones).

Directed by John Milius (Apocalypse Now) and co-written by Oliver Stone (Platoon), Conan polarised critics upon its release in 1982 before going on to become a cult favourite thanks to its epic, gritty action and quotable one-liners.

It was also a box office hit, going on to spawn a sequel and a 2011 reboot, and launched Schwarzenegger as an action star.

Blood Father – Turner Classic Movies – 10.55pm

Mel Gibson stars as an ex-con who reunites with his estranged wayward 17-year old daughter (Erin Moriarty, The Boys) in order to protect her from drug dealers who are trying to kill her.

Blood Father received acclaim upon release in 2016 and is considered one of the best of Gibson’s more recent movies.

Total Recall – Film Four – 11.40pm

The great Colin Farrell stars in this so-so remake of Paul Verhoeven’s sci-fi classic.
