What was the last great sitcom?
The ones that immediately come to mind are The Good Place (which ended in 2020), Modern Family (also ended in 2020), and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (which ended in 2021).
We're all in the market for the next great sitcom, those perfect little 20-to-25 minute nuggets of situational comedy that are so incredible easy to binge watch.
You'll be happy to hear that Abbott Elementary is just that, which is currently sitting pretty with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.
The first season has just ended in the States with the second season now in production, and you'll be happy to learn that the first season is now finally available to stream in Ireland.
Using the same mockumentary set-up as the likes of Parks & Rec, The Office and Modern Family, the series tells the story about a group of dedicated, passionate teachers - and a slightly tone-deaf principal - who are brought together in a Philadelphia public school where, despite the odds stacked against them, they are determined to help their students succeed in life.
The reviews from the US critics have been nothing short of glowing:
IndieWire - "Abbott Elementary should be everyone’s new comedic obsession, with a cast that’s not only funny but who’ve already formed an honest, connective chemistry. The sitcom always feels heartfelt, even when it’s criticising a system that’s overworking teachers and letting down students."
The Hollywood Reporter - "Abbott Elementary already feels like a reliable source of laugh-out-loud moments, thanks to sharply drawn characters and a winning cast. Given time, Abbott Elementary could blossom into something truly special."
Entertainment Weekly - "This show does the most with the basics: a smart conceit, sharp writing, the right cast. Other sitcoms should be taking notes."
All 13 episodes of the first season of Abbott Elementary are available to watch on Disney+ right now.
