All-Ireland champion céilí band give a belting version of the iconic Game of Thrones theme

Paul Moore

Game of Thrones theme

Trad is coming.

Much like the inevitable sense of fear whenever a wedding is announced in Westeros, there are certain things that Game of Thrones fans just dread hearing in the show.

Oddly, one of those is music because it’s synonymous with some scenes that are more depressingly and dire than a direwolf being killed.

For example, you can’t think of The Red Wedding without dwelling the song that’s closely associated with House Lannister, The Rains of Castamere. In fact, the entire mood in the banquet hall of the Twins changed when the band started to play that tune.

Elsewhere, it’s arguable that Cersei Lannister’s greatest ever achievement – destroying the Great Sept of Baelor with all of her enemies inside – was made infinitely more memorable by the piano-driven score by the show’s composer, Ramin Djawadi.

With Season 8 approaching, we’re optimistic that there’s still some good in Westeros and now that the show’s return is getting even closer, we can’t wait until 02:00 on April 15 because once we hear that iconic theme song, the Great War is on!

Before the season premiere, the three-in-a-row All-Ireland céilí champions, The Shandrum Céilí, have given their own unique take on the beloved theme song and it’s an essential listen for trad fans.

Have a listen.
