Andrew Scott is currently the second favourite to win the Best Actor prize at the 2027 Oscars, according to a popular bookmaker.
The Irish star, best known for his roles in All of Us Strangers, Ripley, Pressure and Sherlock, is the lead of Elsinore, a new biographical drama.
In the film, Scott plays Ian Charleson, the Scottish actor who appeared in such movies as Chariots of Fire, Gandhi, and Opera.
A closeted gay man, Charleson was diagnosed with HIV in 1986. Set in 1989, Elsinore depicts the actor's health struggles as he unexpectedly gets an opportunity to portray the title role in a production of Hamlet at London's National Theatre.
Co-starring Olivia Colman, Billie Piper, and Johnny Flynn, the movie and Scott's lead turn have earned rave reviews.
According to bookmaker William Hill, the Irish actor is 5/2 to win the Best Actor prize at next year's Oscars.
This places him narrowly behind Hollywood legend John Malkovich, who has a 6/4 chance for his lead turn in Martin McDonagh's political comedy thriller Wild Horse Nine.
Other major contenders for the Best Actor prize this year are Matt Damon for The Odyssey, Tom Cruise for Digger, and Robert Pattinson for Primetime.
Just this week, JOE caught advance screenings of both Elsinore and Wild Horse Nine. We will talk about them more in the months to come.
We'll just say for now that both are brilliant, and we're also very confident the Best Actor contest at the next Academy Awards is between Malkovich and Scott.
Elsinore is in Irish cinemas on 29 January 2027. Wild Horse Nine lands in theatres here on 6 November 2026.
