We also got our very first look at the third Avatar movie!
With Avatar: The Way Of Water finally available on Disney+ for people to enjoy at home, all eyes are now on the sequels. Writer/director James Cameron had previously said that the first sequel would need to be successful in order for the rest of the sequels to be officially greenlit, and considering The Way Of Water is officially the third biggest box office hit of all time… yeah, we’re thinking it was a success.
Earlier this week, we reported that Disney had reshuffled their entire upcoming movie slate, with everything from Marvel to Star Wars to, yep, Avatar all impacted by the changes. Avatar star Zoe Saldana took to her Instagram stories to react to the news, saying:
“Great. I’m gonna be 53 when the last Avatar comes out. I was 27 when I shot the very first Avatar.”
For the three remaining sequels, Avatar 3 has been pushed one year, from 20 Dec 2024 to 19 Dec 2025, but the others have been pushed back several years, with the fourth movie delayed from 18 Dec 2026 to 21 Dec 2029 and the fifth movie from 22 Dec 2028 to 19 Dec 2031.
Saldana’s co-star Sam Worthington will be 55 when the fifth movie arrives, while Sigourney Weaver will be 82 years old, and James Cameron will be 76.
Off the back of the delays, producer Jon Landau took to Instagram to say the following, as well as sharing the first behind-the-scenes imagery of Avatar 3:
“Each Avatar film is an exciting but epic undertaking that takes time to bring to the quality level we as filmmakers strive for and audiences have come to expect. The team is hard at work and can’t wait to bring audiences back to Pandora in December 2025.”
