Irish stars Barry Keoghan and Jessie Buckley have been nominated for the prestigious Rising Star award by BAFTA

Paul Moore

Barry Keoghan

Delighted for the two Irish actors.

After making a serious impression on Irish audiences with his work in Love/Hate, ’71 and Rebellion, it’s clear that the rest of the world has definitely caught up and realised what a talent Barry Keoghan is.

In many ways, 2017 was the breakout year for the likeable Dubliner after his feature role in Dunkirk.

Keoghan’s performance as George, the stoic and brave young man that just wants to help the cause, definitely left an impression on film fans and he backed this up with a very different role in The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

Dark, twisted and extremely unnerving, Keoghan played one of the most memorable characters of that year as he demonstrated his versatility and range as an actor.

Rather than opt for some ‘safer’ parts, the actor continued to opt for riskier projects including the absolutely brilliant American Animals – a heist thriller that made JOE’s list of the best films of 2018.

Aside from this, the man from Summerhill also starred in box office smash Black ’47 – a film that has grossed over €1 million in Ireland. Lance Daly’s famine epic also had the highest-grossing opening weekend for an Irish film in Ireland since Brooklyn in 2015.

With a role in Y: The Last Man to come, it’s clear that Keoghan is going to be a busy man this year but he has started it off in the best way possible after being nominated for this year’s prestigious EE Rising Star Award by BAFTA.

He’s not the only Irish name on the list though because Kerry’s Jessie Buckley has also been nominated after impressive work in the West End revival of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music. Aside from this, Buckley also playing the role of Moll in Beast and got massive critical acclaim.

Congratulations to the two of them.
