Saltburn

This could be the second Oscar nomination in a row for Barry…

We recently did a round-up on Cillian Murphy’s biggest Oscar competition in the coming months, and Barry Keoghan’s Saltburn was mentioned specifically, as he could be one of three Irish actors up for Best Actor at the next Academy Awards.

The Oscar chances have now shot up significantly, as it has been confirmed that Saltburn will open this year’s London Film Festival on Wednesday 4 October.

The film’s official plot synopsis is as follows: “Struggling to find his place at Oxford University, student Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) finds himself drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi), who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family’s sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten.”

Along with Keoghan and Euphoria star Elordi, the cast also consists of Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Alison Oliver (Conversations With Friends), Archie Madekwe (Midsommar) and Carey Mulligan (Drive).

The darkly comic thriller is written by Academy Award winner Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), and is co-produced by none other than Margot Robbie.

Saltburn

Saltburn was filmed at director Fennell’s own real-life family home

On the movie’s festival opening, Fennell said the following: “I’m honoured that our film is able to open this year’s BFI London Film Festival. It is a festival that inspired me so much growing up, one that I followed excitedly from my bedroom on the other side of London. It feels extra-special that Saltburn, this very British tale of excess, is able to make its international debut at the wonderful BFI.”

Additionally, BFI London Film Festival Director Kristy Matheson is only getting us even more excited to see the movie: “As soon as the credits rolled on Saltburn it was clear we’d met our Opening Night film. Academy Award winner Emerald Fennell returns with an expertly crafted and exhilarating thrill ride of a film that showcases an enormous depth of talents in front of and behind the camera. With its exceptional performances, delicious plot twists and a soundtrack of early 21st century pop bangers; this hugely ambitious film immediately stole our hearts and we can’t wait to share it with audiences in London this October.”

Following its festival run, Saltburn is due to arrive in cinemas in Ireland and the UK on Friday 24 November.
