The BBC is making a documentary about the Manchester Arena attack

It will focus on the survivors.

Anna O'Rourke

Last May’s bombing of Manchester Arena was devastating for a number of reasons.

It took the lives of 22 children and adults and it brought the reality of terrorism closer to home.

It was also an attack on girlhood, on innocence and fun. Its cynical nature, its targeting of young girls, was especially hard to swallow.

Now, almost a year on, BBC Three is catching up with some of the survivors of the tragedy.

Manchester Bomb: The Girls’ Story will follow the stories of some of the young female Ariana Grande fans who were at the Arena that night and survived the blast.

It will look at the the psychological impact on these girls and young women, as well as the ripple effect on their family and friends, according to Digital Spy.

The girls and women we’ll see in the documentary, ranging in age from 28 to just 11, have been through extensive counselling, as well as medical care, since the attack.

“I feel so privileged to have been filming with these girls,” said the documentary’s director, Lizzie Kempton.

“No-one can truly understand what they and their families have been through but I hope this documentary can give some insight and show the strength of these girls at such a difficult time in their lives.”

We don’t yet know when the documentary will be available on BBC Three, which is an online-only channel.
