“If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball!”
Dodgeball is surely one of the funniest and most quotable movies of the last 20 years, but any fans who are waiting for a sequel should not be holding their breath.
Rawson Marshall Thurber, who is currently promoting his new film Skyscrape starring Dwayne Johnson, has clarified that he will never make a follow-up to the 2004 classic which he wrote and directed.
Dodgeball, which starred Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller, is hugely popular, and a reunion last year sparked hopes of a sequel… But that isn’t going to sway Thurber.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the 43-year-old writer and director said “I really appreciate how much people love that movie. It’s near and dear to my heart, but I feel like I said everything I needed to say in one film.”
In fact, Thurber seems tired entirely of sequels, offering a bit of a broadside of the current selection of movies in theatres:
“There’s a place for sequels,” he said. “If you look at the release schedule that surrounds us, you had Oceans 8, which is basically Oceans 4, and then you had Incredibles 2 and then you had Jurassic 5 and then you had Sicario 2 and then you had Ant-Man 2, and then you have us, and we go up against Hotel Transylvania 3, and then after us is Mamma Mia 2 and Equalizer 2 and after them is Mission: Impossible 6.
“We’re literally the only non-sequel in eight weeks on either side of us, which I think is just staggering. So I guess to me, I always focus on what’s next as opposed to what I’ve already done.”
