The Snapper tops the list of the 12 best movies on TV this evening

Conor Heneghan

best movies on tv tonight

“I suppose a ride is out of the question?”

One of a number of memorable quotes from an all-time Irish classic, which you can relive in its entirety on the box from 10.25pm tonight.

If you’ve seen it enough times already – you can never watch The Snapper enough times for our liking – then you’re positively spoiled for choice on one of the best nights to watch a movie on TV in ages.

Don’t believe us? If you can’t find at least one selection from the list below to pass a bit of time this evening, then we may as well give up.

Beauty and The Beast – RTÉ One – 7.05pm

Magnificently-executed remake of the original, starring Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Kevin Kline and Ewan McGregor.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – Channel 4 – 9pm

Featuring THAT climb on the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the fourth entry in the Mission: Impossible series is easily one of the best.

X-Men: Days of Future Past – E4 – 9pm

Like another superhero movie that will feature a little further down this list, all the elements fall together nicely here to create arguably the best entry in the X-Men series.

Rambo: First Blood Part II – ITV4 – 9pm

“They sent him on a mission and set him up to fail, but they made one mistake. They forgot who they were dealing with: Rambo.”

The synopsis doing this movie more justice than we ever could.

The Naked Gun: From The Files of Police Squad – Comedy Central – 9pm

Leslie Nielsen’s first turn as Frank Drebin on the big screen and his second best ever movie after Airplane. Laughs from start to finish.

Fantastic Four – RTÉ 2 – 9.25pm

Not as fantastic as the title suggests, unfortunately.

Pulp Fiction – Dave – 9.40pm

Era-defining masterpiece which still holds up brilliantly well over a quarter of a century on.

Man on Fire – Sky One – 10pm

Is it Denzel’s best movie? Probably not.

Is it still worth watching simply because Denzel is never NOT worth watching? Absolutely.

The Snapper – RTÉ One – 10.25pm

As Georgie Burgess might say, it’s A1.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier – BBC One – 10.25pm

As good as it gets as far as the MCU is concerned. You don’t even have to be a Marvel nut to enjoy it, but it helps.

In the Line of Fire – ITV4 – 11.05pm

Classic Clint Eastwood flick about an assassination attempt on the US president, well worthy of its 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

47 Meters Down – RTÉ 2 – 11.10pm

Perhaps surprisingly not bad… considering the general level of quality in the much-populated shark movie genre. It’s no Sharknado, mind, but what is in fairness?

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
