Here are the 5 best movies on TV this evening

best movies on tv tonight

Including one selection with a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

A Tuesday in the middle of summer traditionally isn’t the best night to find an ample selection of movies to watch on the box and we’re sad to report that this Tuesday isn’t much different.

But…

There at least two movies in tonight’s selection that we can very heartily recommend, another that is certainly worth a watch and two others that, well, we’ll elaborate on a little later.

For your viewing pleasure this Tuesday evening:

Mud – Film4, 6.20pm

Our first selection this evening is probably the pick of the bunch and the one that has warranted the aforementioned 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Reese Witherspoon and Matthew McConaughey (in the peak period of his career) star in a coming-of-age drama that’s a lot more than… alright, alright, alright.

Bowling for Columbine – Sky Documentaries, 9pm

Michael Moore explores the issue of gun violence in the United States in a powerful documentary that was good enough to win an Oscar in 2002.

Cell – Horror Channel, 9pm

Although this 2016 horror has some fine basic ingredients – it’s based on a Stephen King novel and John Cusack and Samuel L Jackson are part of a decent cast – the recipe doesn’t quite work.

Atomic Blonde – Film4 – 9pm

Bit of a regular on the Film4 rotation this one, a very watchable spy thriller with James McAvoy and Charlize Theron heading up a very good cast.

Planet of the Apes, ITV4, 11pm

Alas, this is the 2001 mediocre remake of the original starring Mark Wahlberg and not one of the entries in the excellent reboot series starring James Franco and Andy Serkis amongst others.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
