Here are the best movies on TV this evening

There’s plenty worth checking out tonight.

Thursday is here and as tomorrow is a bank holiday, that means it is pretty much the weekend.

As such, why not celebrate with one of these fine films.

District 9 – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Violence ensues after an extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth finds a kindred spirit in a government agent exposed to their biotechnology.

One of the most inventive sci-fi movies of the 21st century.

The Devil Wears Prada – Comedy Central – 9pm

Meryl Streep is the greatest. Simple as.

Stanley Tucci is also worth tuning into this for.

The Third Man – BBC Four – 9pm

In this iconic film noir written by Graham Greene, pulp novelist Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) travels to shadowy, postwar Vienna, only to find himself investigating the mysterious death of an old friend, Harry Lime (the legendary Orson Welles).

The Nice Guys – Film 4 – 9pm

In this hilarious crime-comedy from writer-director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), an eccentric PI (Ryan Gosling) and grizzled enforcer (Russell Crowe) team-up to find a missing girl in 70’s LA.

Under seen upon its cinema release, The Nice Guys is well worth a watch.

Robin Hood – ITV4 – 10pm

Ridley Scott’s gritty and solid adaptation of the classic tale. Russell Crowe again stars.

Brighton Rock – BBC Four – 10.40pm

Based on another work by writer Graham Greene, a young criminal in 1960’s Brighton is caught on camera killing a man. The evidence falls into the hands of a naive waitress, so the icy murderer seduces her in a bid to ensure her silence.

Sam Riley and Andrea Riseborough lead an ace cast that also includes Andy Serkis, John Hurt and Helen Mirren.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
