Carolina Caroline, a new crime thriller earning rave reviews, has just been made available to watch on this side of the Atlantic.
As they embark on a crime and passion-filled journey through the American South, confidence games escalate into more elaborate heists, and Caroline transforms into a "criminal icon and notorious bank robber".
Directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Adam Carter Rehmeier (Dinner in America, Snack Shack), Carolina Caroline's cast also includes Kyra Sedgwick (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Jon Gries (The White Lotus).
After its US cinema release, the movie garnered a high 93% Rotten Tomatoes score.
In particular, critics praised the film for its classic "lovers-on-the-run" set-up, its charismatic lead turns from Gallner and Weaving, and its sensitive direction.
You can read some of these glowing reactions below:
New York Times: "Nestled into its classic blueprint like a pair of old, reliable jeans, it banks on the quality of its ingredients — its magnetic stars and soulful sincerity — to revitalise its timeworn premise."
Perri Nemiroff: "Caroline and Oliver do a good deal of wrong, but every ounce of it feels right thanks to leads with a beautiful blend of passion, determination and sensitivity, and a director with an impeccable handle on style and an ability to make his movies deeply human."
The Playlist: “Carolina Caroline is sharp, soulful, and unexpectedly affecting, a crime romance powered by the uneasy rush of reinvention and escape."
RogerEbert.com: "It’s a rip-roaring, tragic, joyride."
San Jose Mercury News: "Director Adam Carter Rehmeier (Dinner in America, Snack Shack) and screenwriter Tom Dean keep this thriller zipping along, but what really fires it up are its two leads and a great assist from Kyra Sedgwick in a hold-on-to-your-socks cameo."
Variety: "Samara Weaving and Kyle Gallner, two fine actors rarely granted the glow that comes with a proper star vehicle, positively bask in it here; together, they give a potentially standard film an active heart rate."
Accessible for the first time in Ireland and the UK through the service NOW, the film follows Caroline Daniels (Samara Weaving - Over Your Dead Body, Ready or Not), a gas station attendant desperate to escape her rural West Texas town.
Through her job, she meets Oliver (Kyle Gallner - Smile, Strange Darling), a charismatic con man. The pair quickly fall in love, with Caroline agreeing to travel with him, hoping to reach South Carolina, where her estranged mother lives.
