Here are the best movies on TV this evening

What will you be watching?

Hang in there. There’s just one more day until the Bank Holiday weekend is here.

To make the time fly faster, why not check out one of the fine movies airing on TV tonight.

Here, JOE has selected the evening’s best options.

The Shape of Water – Film Four – 9pm

Best Picture winner at the Oscars in 2017, Guillermo del Toro’s gorgeous romantic fantasy film centres on a lonely janitor (Sally Hawkins) working at a top-secret research facility in the 1960s. She forms a unique relationship with an amphibious creature (Doug Jones) that is being held in captivity.

You wouldn’t think a sci-fi film about a woman falling in romantic love with a man-fish would be emotionally impactful but this left me a blubbering mess when I saw it in the cinema.

My Week with Marilyn – BBC Four – 9pm

The great Michelle Williams plays legendary actress and model Marilyn Monroe in this drama depicting the making of the 1957 film The Prince and the Showgirl.

I imagine there will be a renewed interest in this movie soon as Netflix is set to release Blonde, a movie starring Ana de Armas as Monroe, later in the year.

Run All Night – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

One of Liam Neeson’s better post-Taken action films, he plays an ex-hitman who goes on the run with his estranged adult son (Joel Kinnaman) after he is forced to kill the son of a mafia boss.

Joining Neeson in the cast to bolster the tough old man vibes is Ed Harris and Nick Nolte.

Metro – ITV 4 – 11pm

Eddie Murphy stars in this action-comedy as a hostage negotiator and inspector for the San Francisco Police Department who seeks revenge against a psychotic jewel thief (Michael Wincott) who murdered his best friend.

Picnic at Hanging Rock – Film Four – 11.25pm

This cult Aussie drama from the 70s centres on the disappearance of several schoolgirls and their teacher during a picnic at Hanging Rock in Victoria in 1900 and the subsequent effect this has on the local community.

The film was directed by Peter Weir, who would later helm Witness, Dead Poets Society and The Truman Show.

Inception – Turner Classic Movies – 11.25pm

Yes, we recommended this yesterday. But Inception is great and there’s never a bad time to watch it.

It also features Cillian Murphy, who JOE recently chatted to about A Quiet Place Part II.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
