Here are the best movies on TV this evening

Stephen Porzio

There’s plenty of choices.

Stuck for something to watch this Saturday evening? Not to worry as JOE has compiled a list of the best movies airing on TV tonight.

Below are our picks.

Romancing the Stone – ITV 4 – 8pm

A mousy romance novelist (Kathleen Turner) sets off for Colombia to ransom her kidnapped sister, and soon finds herself in the middle of a dangerous adventure hunting for treasure with a mercenary rogue (Michael Douglas).

An 80’s adventure flick in the vein of Indiana Jones, its director Robert Zemeckis would go on to make Back to the Future and Forrest Gump.

Daredevil – Sky One – 9pm

An early much-maligned entry in the now dominant superhero film genre, Ben Affleck stars.

While certainly inferior to the later Netflix series, it does boast an incredibly fun turn from our own Colin Farrell.

The Greatest Showman – Film Four – 9pm

Starring Hugh Jackman, this musical drama is inspired by the story of P. T. Barnum’s creation of Barnum’s American Museum and the lives of its star attractions.

Also featuring in its cast Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya, The Greatest Showman is the fifth-highest-grossing live-action musical of all time.

Donnie Brasco – TG4 – 9.20pm

An FBI undercover agent (Johnny Depp) infiltrates the mob and finds himself identifying more with the mafia life, at the expense of his regular one.

Also starring Al Pacino, Donnie Brasco is one of the quintessential undercover crime dramas.

Crazy Rich Asians – RTÉ One – 9.30pm

This rom-com follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s family. Before long, his secret is out: his family is very very wealthy.

Fun and frothy, it’s from director Jon M. Chu whose latest highly-anticipated film In the Heights is out next week.

Jason Bourne – Channel 4 – 10pm

Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), the CIA’s most dangerous former operative, is drawn out of hiding to uncover more explosive truths about his past.

While a step down from previous entries in the franchise, this fifth entry still functions as a solid action movie and includes one bravura set-piece which takes place during a protest in Greece.

Welcome to the Jungle – Comedy Central – 10pm

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars a bounty hunter who travels to Brazil to retrieve his employer’s son (Seann William Scott). Christopher Walken plays the villain.

Also known as The Rundown in some territories, Welcome to the Jungle was one of Johnson’s first lead roles and is a lot of fun.

Jack Reacher – ITV 4 – 10.10pm

In this adaptation of a Lee Child novel, Tom Cruise stars as a drifter and former army military police officer who becomes embroiled in an investigation into a series of killings.

Boasting a charismatic turn from Cruise, legendary German filmmaker Werner Herzog chewing the scenery as the villain of the piece and a twisty plot, Jack Reacher is well worth viewers’ time.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
