Two picks with Rotten Tomatoes ratings of 97% and 100% head the list of our choices today.
Today is New Year’s Eve Eve, which means we’re running out of days over Christmas where it is generally considered acceptable to spend hours upon hours doing little but watching movies.
Might as well make the most of it while we can then and we’re glad to report that our selection today includes three movies with Rotten Tomatoes ratings in excess of 90%.
Here goes…
The Secret Garden – RTÉ2 – 1.45pm
Excellent adaptation of a classic fairytale that makes for an ideal bit of escapism of a wintry Wednesday afternoon.
Trolls – BBC One – 1.50pm
Highly enjoyable 2016 animation, with Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Russell Brand and Jeffrey Tambor featuring in a star-studded voice cast.
Twins – RTÉ One – 3.45pm
Name a better duo than Arnie and Danny DeVito. We’ll wait.
Dirty Dancing – Channel 5 – 6pm
“Now I’ve had the time of my life…”
Live and Let Die – RTÉ2 – 6pm
Not the best Bond movie but certainly not the worst, featuring Roger Moore as 007.
Goodbye Christopher Robin – Film4 – 6.50pm
Anything with either Domhnall Gleeson or Margot Robbie in it is normally good viewing and the two combine to decent effect in a tale about the life of writer A.A. Milne.
Man on Wire – Sky Documentaries – 9pm
A gripping account of Frenchman Philippe Petit’s real-life high wire walk between the Twin Towers in New York in 1974.
Comes with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a guarantee you won’t budge from the edge of your seat throughout
The Mummy – RTÉ2 – 9.20pm
Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe star in a reboot that is far darker than the Brendan Fraser movies and, sadly, none the better for it.
Inside Llewyn Davies – TG4 – 10.30pm
The Coen Brothers are on top form in this 2013 account of a fictional folk singer making his mark on the music business.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople – Film4 – 10.50pm
One of the sweetest, most charming and arguably underrated comedies of the 20th century, well worth its 97% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
If you haven’t yet seen it, put that right tonight.
Legend – More4 – 11.05pm
A double dose of Tom Hardy, who plays both Kray twins in a perfectly competent gangster flick.

No Ordinary Heist, a new Irish crime thriller inspired by actual events, is available to watch in cinemas from this weekend.
