The Apres Match team approached the family of the late Bill O’Herlihy to ask their permission to keep him in their sketches.

The Irish Sun reports that Gary Cooke, Risteard Cooper and Barry Murphy approached the O’Herlihys. who were happy to have been asked and gave their blessing to seeing Billo – played by Cooper – as part of the new Apres Match Of The Day series.

A source revealed: “After the new series was agreed on, the lads got on to the O’Herlihy family to ask could they continue the Bill character.

“Obviously they were very fond of Bill and had a great relationship with him, but they were also very mindful of the family and didn’t want to seem disrespectful.

“But the family were more than happy for it to continue and they really appreciated being contacted and asked. The lads are delighted because Bill was such an integral part of Irish sporting life and they’re thrilled he will still be a big part of the series.”
