A serial killer thriller with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and 5 more movies & shows to watch this weekend

Rory Cashin

This week also sees the latest Marvel blockbuster, the new movie from the director of Moana, and a series about building your own sex room!

To kick things off, here are the movies which will all be available on the big screens around Ireland from Friday, 8 July.

THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER

The huge Marvel sequel brings back Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, who has been empowered by Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) old hammer, and the former couple team up to take down a new evil (played by Christian Bale), who is going around killing all of the gods in the universe.

Check out our interview with the movie’s director and co-star Taika Waititi right here:

BRIAN AND CHARLES

Brian (David Earl) is a lonely inventor in rural Wales who doesn’t let the lack of success get in the way of his passion, which results in him creating an artificially intelligent companion, which he names Charles (Chris Heyward).

And now on to the stuff you can watch at home this week, starting with…

THE BABY

This darkly comic horror series tells the story of a free-living woman (Michelle de Swarte) who finds her life turned completely upside down by the arrival of a baby. But she doesn’t know where the baby came from, or how to explain the baby’s apparently supernatural – and particular violent – powers.

All episodes are available to watch with a NOW Entertainment Pass from Thursday, 7 July.

HOW TO BUILD A SEX ROOM

From a rock ‘n’ roll sex dungeon to a next-level spa space, designer Melanie Rose dreams up erotic renovations for couples in this racy reality series.

All episodes are available to watch on Netflix from Friday, 8 July.

BLACK BIRD

A true story thriller that feels like a spiritual successor to Mindhunter: a prisoner (Taron Egerton) must get a confession from a fellow inmate (Paul Walter Hauser) which will help the FBI find the location of 18 murder victims in exchange for a shorter sentence. From the writer of Shutter Island, it also features one of the final performances from the late, great Ray Liotta.

At the time of writing, it has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The first two episodes will arrive on Apple TV+ on Friday, 8 July, with new episodes arriving weekly after that.

THE SEA BEAST

When a young girl stows away on the ship of a legendary sea monster hunter, they launch an epic journey into uncharted waters — and make history to boot. From the co-director of Moana and Big Hero 6, with a voice cast including Karl Urban, Jared Harris, Kathy Burke and Dan Stevens.

The movie is available to watch on Netflix from Friday, 8 July.
