Netflix has just added Black Rabbit, an addictive new crime thriller show starring Jason Bateman (Ozark) and Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley).
Created by Kate Susman and Zach Baylin (The Order), the limited series follows Jake (Law), a charismatic restauranteur who has spent years striving to turn the Black Rabbit - his restuarant and VIP lounge - into New York City's hottest spot.
Just as Jake is on the cusp of turning Black Rabbit into a chain and getting everything he has ever wanted, his black sheep brother, Vince (Bateman), unexpectedly returns.
With Vince's arrival comes a ton of trouble, however, trouble that threatens to tear down everything Jake has built for himself.
Along with Bateman and Law, the cast of Black Rabbit includes Oscar-winner Troy Kotsur (CODA), as well as Abbey Lee (Old), Amaka Okafor (The Responder), Cleopatra Coleman (Infinity Pool), Dagmara Domińczyk (Succession), Odessa Young (The Narrow Road to the Deep North) and Sope Dirisu (Gangs of London).
On top of starring in the series, Bateman directed its first two episodes. His former Ozark co-star Laura Linney and acclaimed filmmaker Justin Kurzel (The Order) also helmed a couple of episodes of the eight-part show.
JOE has watched the pilot of Black Rabbit and we can't wait to watch more.
Bateman and Law are terrific as estranged brothers who couldn't be more different from each other, yet do share an inextricable bond and a believable chemistry.
But also, the New York City setting - which Bateman shoots in the same atmospheric foreboding style that made Ozark stand out from the crowd - is intoxicating, while the blend of kitchen and crime drama keeps the stress levels high.
It's this mix that has led to Black Rabbit already being dubbed "The Bear meets Uncut Gems" and "The Bear meets Ozark", and the comparisons are apt.
You can check out a sample of some other postive reviews for the Netflix limited series below:
Boston Globe: "Black Rabbit serves up high blood pressure for an appetiser, heart palpitations for an entree, and a panic attack for dessert… And yet the series is eminently watchable, at times even addictive."
Film Authority: "Black Rabbit has the same kind of edge that made Jason Bateman's Ozark so popular, delving into hard criminality barely hidden by upper-middle-class lifestyles, with an added dose of the physical nastiness that used to be the preserve of slasher movies…"
New Statesman: "Law and Bateman deliver magnetic performances as aggressive charismas under tremendous strain. Black Rabbit is high-calorie drama."
NME: "Proper, old-fashioned character work wrapped up in a sharp, no-nonsense thriller that bothers to take its time."
Black Rabbit is streaming in its entirety on Netflix now.
