The bookies’ favourite to replace Peter Capaldi in Doctor Who is an inspired choice

Rory Cashin

When it was announced that Peter Capaldi’s next season as the Tardis-rider would be his last, the entire internet went into the usual swell of “Guess Who?” for his replacement.

The speculation by the fan base and entertainment pundits for the role is matched only by James Bond, and not unlike that franchise, there is talk of a bit of a gender switch-up for the next iteration.

Which brings us to the bookies‘ favourite, none other than… (drum-roll please)… Tilda Swinton!

That’s right, the Oscar-winning star of Doctor Strange, Constantine and The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe is currently top of the pack with 7/2 odds.

Close behind her is Love, Actually actor Kris Marshall (he was the guy who went to America to get a girlfriend) at 4/1, followed by Broadchurch’s Olivia Colman at 5/1, Shameless actress Maxine Peake at 8/1, and at 10/1 we’ve got Ben Whishaw, best known for playing Q in the recent Bond movies.

Sci-fi author Neil Gaiman took to Radio 5Live to claim his favourites for the part: Helen Mirren, Gillian Anderson and, in a complete stroke of genius, The Great British Bake Off’s Sue Perkins.
