A true undiscovered gem.
Our TV movie pick for tonight (Tuesday, 1 October) is Boss Level, the 2020 sci-fi action flick co-written and directed by Joe Carnahan (Copshop, Narc, The Grey).
In the vein of stories like Groundhog Day and Edge of Tomorrow, Copshop’s Frank Grillo plays a former special forces agent named Roy Pulver who is trapped in a time loop that constantly repeats the day of his murder.
After 140 days of this loop, Pulver has become more adept at dodging the eclectic gang of killers dispatched to take him out.
This is as he tries to uncover clues about a secret government project that could unlock the mystery behind his death and why he is experiencing such bizarre phenomena.
“In a race against the clock, Pulver must hunt down Colonel Ventor (Mel Gibson), the powerful head of the government program, while outrunning skilled ruthless assassins determined to keep him from the truth in order to break out of the loop, save his family and live once again for tomorrow,” the plot synopsis reads.
Boss Level’s star-studded cast also includes Annabelle Wallis, Ken Jeong, Michelle Yeoh and Naomi Watts.
And the movie’s brilliantly bonkers action sequences, its clever video game inspired story and its likeable lead turn from Grillo make it well-worth seeking out for genre fans.
Sadly, the film did not get a cinema release in Ireland, going straight to Prime Video instead.
And though it is no longer streaming on the service, you have a chance to watch Boss Level again tonight on Film4 at 9pm.
It is also available to rent on Apple, Rakuten TV and Sky Store.
