Our TV movie pick for tonight (Wednesday, 10 December) is Boys from County Hell, the excellent 2020 Irish horror thriller comedy.
The film takes place in Six Mile Hill, a sleepy Irish town that claims to have been visited by Bram Stoker, where construction on a new road disrupts the alleged grave of Abhartach, a legendary Irish vampire said to have inspired Dracula.
"Deadly and sinister forces then terrorise the work crew led by Francie Moffat (Nigel O'Neill, Bad Day for the Cut) and his son Eugene (Jack Rowan, Peaky Blinders), [the latter] a free-spirited young man who prefers pints to pickaxes," the plot synopsis adds.
"They're forced to fight to survive the night while exposing the true horror that resides in the town's local myth."
From director Chris Baugh (Bad Day for the Cut), the cast of Boys from County Hell also includes John Lynch (The Fall), Fra Fee (Rebel Moon), Lalor Roddy (That They May Face the Rising Sun) and Louise Harland (Derry Girls).
Thanks to its clever spin on vampire lore, its likeable characters and its surprisingly emotional story, the Irish flick earned very positive reviews upon release.
Holding an 82% Rotten Tomatoes score, the movie is airing on TV tonight on BBC One at 10.40pm. It is also available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play, Rakuten TV and the Sky Store.
