Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan teases the return of Gus in Better Call Saul

Tread lightly…

In the definitive list of amazing TV shows, JOE would rank Breaking Bad alongside Father Ted, The Simpsons and EastEnders… one of these isn’t true.

JOE already brought you the sad news that the show’s spin-off, Better Call Saul, has been slightly delayed but that hasn’t stopped details of the plot leaking out.

As we’ve already learned, the action will take place before, during and after the events in Breaking Bad but the new show will be set in 2002, 6 years before Saul Goodman meets Walter White.

When we meet Saul for the first time, he actually goes by the name of Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer hustling to make ends meet and working with Breaking Bad favourite Mike. The series will track Jimmy’s transformation into Saul Goodman.

Entertainment Weekly reports that we will also be introduced to some new characters including Saul’s brother Chuck (played by Michael McKean from This is Spinal Tap)

Show creator Vince Gilligan was non-committal about a potential return for Walter White saying, “If it makes sense we’ll do it, if it doesn’t make sense we won’t… I’d love to have him [Bryan Cranston] as a director… Character wise, who knows? Maybe there’s a way to do it.”

It looks like one of JOE’s favourite characters, Gus, will be featuring quite prominently though. Showrunner Peter Gould has said, “There’s so much more to say about Gus… Having said that, we’re trying to make something that stands on its own that has entertainment value, and that’s not just seeing a series of old favourites. It’s not the series equivalent of a clip show.”

Just don’t leave any box-cutters lying around when Gus is around. That scene is still burned into JOE’s memories.

Better Call Saul is set for release next year with a first season run of ten episodes. A second season has already been commissioned which will consist of 13 episodes.

JOE has unbelievably high hopes for this spin-off but to quote Saul, “If you’re committed enough, you can make any story work. I once told a woman I was Kevin Costner, and it worked because I believed it.”
