WATCH: Colin Farrell surprises SNL viewers during hilarious Brendan Gleeson monologue

Hugh Carr

“Who’s your most favourite co-star you’ve ever worked with?” “Paddington Bear.”

Saturday Night Live viewers were treated to a two-for-one deal of Irish charm when Colin Farrell surprised the crowd during guest host Brendan Gleeson’s opening monologue.

The pair were on the long-running comedy sketch show to promote their latest film, The Banshees of Inisherin.

The film is already receiving wide praise, with Farrell and director Martin McDonagh winning big at the Venice Film Festival, and the film already receiving higher praise than their previous collaboration, In Bruges.

Gleeson opened his monologue poking fun at his extensive back-catalogue.

“Well, I’m Brendan Gleeson, and if you don’t recognise the accent, I’m Irish,” he began.

“And if you don’t recognise the face, I’m that fella in that thing you’ve seen in that thing you can’t remember, but you think that you kind of liked.”

Gleeson proceeded to tell the audience that he wasn’t comfortable with telling jokes, and proceeded to play the mandolin, where he managed to fit a few quips in between tunes.

“This is the first tune I ever learned, and it was made famous by a man named Barney McKenna.

“Barney was the banjo player with the Dubliners, and they were travelling to a very hot country one time, and Barney was told it would be 40 degrees in the shade.

“And Barney says ‘I’ll tell you one thing; I’m not going anywhere near the shade.”

Farrell makes an appearance after Gleeson describes the new film as “about two fellas who fall out because one of them is too needy.”

“I mean, I love Colin, but the story’s not too far from the truth.”

Farrell then appears to ask Gleeson some leading questions about their time working together.

“Who’s your most favourite co-star you’ve ever worked with?”, Farrell asks.

“Paddington Bear,” Gleeson replies.

“Well, I mean, who’s your favourite human co-star, who’s Irish and he’s about 46, and his name starts with a C?”

“Cillian Murphy!”

The pair then sing together before starting the show in usual fashion.

Farrell also made a cameo in a later sketch, with the pair posing for headshots.

Gleeson’s appearance on the show went viral earlier in the week, with a teaser showing the actor’s love for skateboarding.
