Bridget and Eamon’s TV series has just been bought by a UK company

Will the citizens of Britain understand the jokes and jibes?

RTÉ comedy series Bridget & Eamon has been acquired by UKTV.

The deal marks the first time that a comedy fully funded by RTÉ will air in the UK and the six-episode sitcom will be on Gold, UKTV’s comedy channel, this autumn.

Bridget & Eamon started off as a sketch on RTÉ2’s The Republic of Telly and so popular were the couple’s midland shenanigans that RTÉ commissioned a full series last year.

The show stars Jennifer Zamparelli as a chain-smoking housewife with notions and Bernard O’Shea as the hapless husband.

The very unhappily married couple live somewhere in the Irish Midlands with their children and neither Eamon nor Bridget seem to know how many they have.

RTÉ Head of Comedy, Eddie Doyle, said: “This is a real breakthrough for Irish comedy in Britain. Bridget & Eamon shows how Irish writers, performers and producers can compete in one of the biggest, most creative comedy marketplaces in the world.”

The pair’s reaction to their UK debut is quintessential.

We’re already looking forward to the reactions of the new audience.
