Accessible through Prime Video in its entirety, the eight-part series sees Summer H. Howell (Normal) step into the role of misfit teen Carrie White.
The girl has spent her whole life hidden away at home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan, Midnight Mass). After her father’s sudden and untimely death, however, she is thrust into the unforgiving ecosystem of an American public high school.
"Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social‑media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence," the plot synopsis adds.
JOE has only gotten to check out a little of the King adaptation so far, but we've been impressed by what we've seen. Carrie is a classic story, previously made into a 1976 film directed by Brian De Palma that still holds up today.
That said, Flanagan seems to have found a fresh way of fleshing out and updating the tale for the modern age, while still retaining what made it so iconic.
We're not the only ones who feel like this. The series has a high 85% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes.

| Publication | Quote |
| Empire | "Flanagan offers a strikingly fresh, superbly acted version of King’s story, with enough ideas and nuance to fill a high-school gymnasium." |
| The Guardian | "Of course this Carrie doesn’t have the raw power of the film. But it has intelligence, wit and things to say about the fathomless potential for good and ill in the teenage heart - and how impossible it is to teach them which way to go." |
| Inverse | "A great example of using character to deepen and modernise what Stephen King was doing in his original novel." |
| RogerEbert.com | "It hums along on the strengths of the stylish visuals, the black humour, and the universally excellent performances." |
| San Jose Mercury News | "There is a freshness to this Carrie that’s hard to resist, as Flanagan brings King’s story into a chaotic world where social media takes cruelty and human behaviour to new lows." |
| Seattle Times | "Like he did with Hill House, Flanagan has created an excellent adaptation, one that’s hard to look away from, even with all of its horrors." |
| Slant Magazine | "Mike Flanagan brings Stephen King's chilling, tragic teen parable to the Instagram age." |
| Slate | "Flanagan stays faithful to the most important parts of the novel while also updating and expanding King’s story considerably, with mostly successful results." |
