Whatever it is, we can’t wait.

Charile Brooker has confirmed that his new project entitled Death to 2020 is different to Black Mirror, and is not a part of the series.

It will look at this disgrace of a year through a comical lens, with stars like Hugh Grant playing an aging historian, and Tracey Ullman as Queen Elizabeth II.

And while it sounds as though it would fit in perfectly with the anthology series, it will instead be its own thing. That doesn’t mean we’re any less excited though…

Speaking to Digital Spy, Brooker said: “The approach of this particular special is very different from the kind of stuff I’ve done in the past. For one thing, I’m not in it. Which is a relief to everyone.

“And it’s more sort of character-based… So it is, effectively, it’s like a mock documentary about the year, because that’s felt like a very apt format for a show that’s going on Netflix, as well as high-end dramas it’s had great success with doing a lot of documentaries – often about appalling things happening, with beautiful cinematography, you know a lot of drone shots and a sort of bleak piano note being struck…

“So it seemed like it was a good opportunity to do something that was talking about the year and was also sort of gently tweaking the nose of a sort of format that you would see on Netflix.

“And, also, we could showcase a lot of brilliant performances.”

Death to 2020 premieres on Netflix on 27 December.
