Cillian Murphy explains why you never see Tommy Shelby eat in Peaky Blinders

Paul Moore

Plenty of Peaky Blinders fans noticed this.

During a recent interview, Cillian Murphy revealed that Season 4 of Peaky Blinders is set to return to our screens in November.

“I think it will be the best (season). It’s pretty powerful, we’ve got lots of surprises. It’s soon, it’s November I think,” said the Irish actor, but given how Season 3 ended, there’s no denying that Tommy has plenty of things to do.

To complicate matters, we’re being told that Adrien Brody and his gang of Italian-Americans will be the “biggest threat” that the Peaky Blinders have ever faced and after seeing that breathtaking trailer, there’s no denying that Steven Knight has upped the action in Season 4.

With the amount of danger surrounding the Shelby family, Tommy might not even have the time to enjoy a glass of whiskey or smoke a cigarette. Na, that’s impossible!

This being said, the star of Dunkirk and The Dark Knight trilogy has addressed one quirk that some viewers of the show have picked up on, why do we never see Tommy eat when he’s on-screen?

Well, in an interview with World Screen, the actor actually spoke about this interesting quirk.

“It seems like he never sleeps or eats. In fact, over the whole four seasons so far, we never see Tom Shelby eat; a morsel never enters his mouth! He is all-consuming and obviously the nature of television – being that you are shooting so many episodes and so many setups per day and you have so many lines to learn – means that it does take over your life, but in a brilliant way. It’s what every actor would want.”

Given the fact that Alfie Solomons is using a bakery as a cover for his distillery, you would think that someone would give Tommy a sandwich for his troubles.
